HRS Gallery: HRS in the Community

Steve H on the wardsOne of the principles of successful hospital radio is getting out and about meeting people: probably more than full-time commercial and public service broadcasting. We feel that meeting patients keeps us in touch with their needs and interests, and all broadcasters are encouraged to gather requests on the wards.

Some programmes come from the wards, either through interviews recorded with patients and staff or live with a roving microphone.. Patients are encouraged to telephone the studios on a free call number.

The picture on the right shows Steve Hyden, as part of Friday evening broadcasting for children.

Hednesford CarnivalWe also aim to cover key local events either live or on tape. We take live reports from local football matches, a live service is broadcast every Sunday from one of the hospital chapels and concerts are broadcast every Christmas.

Fund-raising is another way of meeting the public and it's always a pleasant surprise, even when you're dressed as curiously as Sheila, Allan, Sheila and Val in the picture on the left, how often people come to have a chat. Many have heard us while in hospital.
